George Rogers Clark High School.jpg

D.W. Wilburn served as construction manager for the new George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, Kentucky. The new facility was built to replace the county’s only existing high school, one that would no longer accommodate the 1,900 students in grades 9 through 12.

Project features included a 267,000-SF high school with a separate 42,000-SF area technology center and performance gymnasium. The main high school facility features standard classrooms, specialized classrooms, an agriculture department and greenhouse, an extensive interior courtyard with outdoor learning space, a media center, computer labs, multi-purpose rooms, an auxiliary gymnasium, kitchen and cafeteria, administrative offices, as well as a 600-seat, two-story auditorium with extended stage.

Sustainability features include natural daylighting, skylights, sun shades, high-performance insulation, a reflective roof, high performance HVAC systems and two vegetated roofs with water harvesting systems used for integrated irrigation.

Project challenges included a large 90-acre site built in multiple-phases as funding allowed, with the high school being built first and the area technology center and performance gymnasium following.
